Call for Resident Makers
Joinery is a working craft house and neighborhood third place in North Seattle: a calm, design-forward space where the public can see skilled work being made, take classes, and buy functional objects for the home—made by the resident makers.
We’re building a small cohort of resident studios whose work anchors the retail floor, the teaching program, and the daily rhythm of the space.
What We’re Looking For
We’re seeking makers with:
- Craft mastery and design clarity (work that feels permanent, not trendy)
- Retail readiness (consistent SKUs, strong finishing, reliable packaging/labeling)
- Production reliability (ability to keep core items stocked)
- Teaching ability (clear instruction, calm presence, good outcomes for students)
- Professionalism (communication, deadlines, quality control)
What Belongs at Joinery
Joinery is centered on functional objects for the home—quiet, well-made, and meant to be used daily.
We’re open to a wide range of disciplines, including (but not limited to): ceramics, wood, metal, glass, leather, textiles, paper/book arts, lighting, and small furniture—so long as the work is function-first and design-led.
Coffee supports the space; the work is the anchor.
Term: 12 months, with option to renew
Studio rent: Below-market, based on studio size and needs
Retail revenue share: 65% artist / 35% Joinery on sales through Joinery
Teaching: Each resident teaches 1 seminar/month (Joinery manages marketing, registration, and materials logistics; resident delivers the class)
Joinery provides:
- A public-facing retail and gallery environment with staff and POS
- Merchandising, pricing bands, and curation (with final curatorial authority)
- Ongoing programming support and a predictable weekly/monthly calendar
- Visibility: studios designed for “making in view,” without turning the space into a spectacle
Residents provide:
- A consistent body of work aligned with Joinery’s functional home focus
- A reliable inventory cadence (core products stay stocked)
- One well-run seminar each month
- Clean, safe, professional studio operations
You’re a strong fit if:
- Your work has a coherent line and repeatable forms (not one-offs only)
- You can restock regularly and plan production in cycles
- You’re excited by a space where making is visible and the public becomes a steady community
- You care about objects being used—daily—over “statement pieces”
